I feel very self conscious about the gifts I give because I know I’m under a heavy microscope when giving gifts during the holidays. My family is very materialist and superficial and I know I can’t always afford nice things or name brand items so I know they don’t care for the gifts I usually give them.
Sometimes I feel like I just can’t ever do enough to please my family or myself which just leads to more anxiety and stress. I know I should just learn to relax and be happy with what I have but I guess I just haven’t found away too to so yet.
Could you please help with some advice on getting a grip. I feel like I’m loosing mine.
Stressed for the Holidays
This sounds like more than just a holiday anxiety attack. So I will not hold back in saying that if you continue on the path you are traveling you will surely due more harm than good to your own well being. You might want to lighten up after reading these few facts about stress.
Stress can indeed cause serious illness and even death:
The body doesn’t distinguish between physical and psychological threats. When you’re stressed over a busy schedule, an argument with a friend, a traffic jam, or a mountain of bills, your body reacts just as strongly as if you were facing a life-or-death situation. If you have a lot of responsibilities and worries, your emergency stress response may be most of the time. The more your body’s stress system is activated, the easier it is to trip and the harder it is to shut off.
Long-term exposure to stress can lead to serious health problems. Chronic stress disrupts nearly every system in your body. It can raise blood pressure, suppress the immune system, increase the risk of heart attack and stroke, contribute to infertility, and speed up the aging process. Long-term stress can even rewire the brain, leaving you more vulnerable to anxiety and depression
Nothing is more important right now that you getting a grip on yourself immediately. You have to come to the realization that no matter what anyone else thinks about you or any material possessions you may or may not have, that you need to start loving yourself and excepting yourself for who you are and what you are humanly capable of doing.
You could acquire all the material possession in the world by working yourself to a pulp. Yet will never have the ability to take those same material possessions, you and your relatives worry so much about with you, when you pass on. So don’t lead yourself to an early grave over it, by adding more stress and anxiety than you need to handle.
Start to truly learn to love yourself for who you are and not what you can or can’t bring to the table during the holidays or any day for that matter. Try enjoying life a little more and doing some real soul searching. Ask yourself what your real priorities and desires are in life. Is it really worth all the anxiety and stress your taking your body and spirit through?
Take action and start a stress management program or plan for yourself. There is no better time than now to try.
In regards to your family’s scrutiny over your gift giving choices. For a little light humor try to act as if you are not giving any gifts at all and watch the response. Then surprise them with what you have and see how quickly they will appreciate and humble themselves to any gifts you give them.
“Better to have the experience of receiving than not to receive at all”
Start feeling good about yourself today.
